Breeding
I have been asked by a lot of my friends about my breeding method, so here it
is:
First, I see each breeding season as a challenge. I have some new breeders and
some from previous seasons, so I do not believe in the philosophy of just
breeding pigeons to look like perfect specimens; but then the perfect specimens
could not fly 5 feet off the ground! Pigeons are given wings to fly and not be
locked up in a small cage, never seeing natural daylight. So I breed them to
fly!
To raise good flyers, you must have quality stock. I only use ten to fifteen
breeding pairs and raise about 45 youngsters every year. The challenge for me is
to pair up the birds that would give me the best offspring. I put very little
emphasis on color when breeding my Tehran High Flyers, but do try for strong
healthy young from strong healthy parents. To get quality birds, I always put
my best flying cock to my best flying hen. A lot of time and energy was spent to
import these birds from Tehran. So, by pairing this way, I am trying to keep
the breed as pure as possible.
Some prefer open breeding, but I prefer to keep each pair on a separate cage.
Keeping them on a separate cage of 24" by 36" by 18" ensures me that they will
stay as pure as possible. And, I also find that the young grow a lot faster.
